Don’t hate me, but coffee and I do not agree! I already feel like I am wearing roller skates daily chasing the next thought in my brain. Even in this very moment, I just got a “pop up” and was thinking about my next recipe…… should it be sweet or savory? Could be why in the day when I was studying Buddhism and meditation I never could reach that all aspiring enlightened place? I even had the opportunity to travel to China and study for 2 weeks at a medical school for acupuncture and Gi Qong. I studied meditation with the best, learned a lot and came home calmer than ever before (my husband said that only lasted 2 weeks).
Many of times, with tingles and prickles in my crossed legs I thought I reached enlightenment, but I would startle myself with a little snort of sorts…. ok a snore (it just sounds so unlady like) and realize I had fallen asleep again. Looking back, I have to wonder; was I the only one daydreaming about food or fighting the urge to scratch my ear off as that “little nothing sensation” got so out of control as it spread across my whole body and it consumed my every breath? Today I am happy to say I find myself in peaceful prayer rather than “trying” to attain this enlightened place I got lost in looking for (maybe GPS could help me, lol). I would love to hear from you if you have reached this place (comment below). Of course, tell me your thoughts on this smoothie too!
Coffee Bean Smoothie
Naturally I walk fast, think fast, like to cook fast, shower fast (well that was pre kid, now I like long showers), clean fast, exercise fast, read fast, type fast, get there fast (I have slowed down police friends- promise…. I have a kid now…..and a dog). In fact people often say “there goes Dawn and H…e…r…e comes Tom.” It is a conscience effort for me to slow down and wait for Adriana too (she has daddies long legs but his slow meticulous pace). I am much better these days about slowing it down only because I do not want my kid thinking we should rush through life.
So if I drink caffeine, I act and talk like the energizer bunny on speed skates trying to auction off something…. Going once, going twice, sold to the young lady over there who looks hungry! However, I do, I do, oh love the smell of fresh roasted coffee brewing. Thank goodness we fast peeps can at least enjoy the smell of fresh brewing coffee and not flip out. This is my attempt to do your taste buds and health justice for my coffee drinkin friends. Oh and the best part of this smoothie is it is packed with 18 grams of protein and some super foods full of antioxidants, iron, magnesium, and calcium! Adriana enjoyed this smoothie for breakfast too and got a kick out of drinking (decaff) coffee (please if you use caffeine hold off sharing with your kids). This truly is a filling meal……and actually I feel full of enlightenment!
If you read between the lines of this blog you may guess the Doc is not a big fan of coffee (or all its fancy flavors and sugars) especially if someone is trying to alkaline their body from disease. Keep in mind moderation is the best method of enjoyment. If you “have to have it” you can’t consider that to be moderation in your life. We suggest to our patients organic green/white tea or herbal tea as a better choice for a daily routine. Enjoy your Spoonful of Health or in this case cupful of health! Cheers!
Coffee Bean Smoothie
12 ounces of almond milk (or water, or chilled coffee)
1/2 cup of washed cashews (to make this nut free use 4 tablespoons raw sun butter)
2 tablespoons of hempseeds (learn more)
2 tablespoon of chia seeds (learn more)
2 tablespoons of unsweetened cacao (learn more)
Handful of ice cubes (about 4)
2 teaspoons ground up roasted coffee beans (decaffeinated if you are like me)
1 teaspoon of hazelnut extract (omit for nut free )
1 teaspoon of coffee extract
1/8-1/2 teaspoon of stevia or natural sweetener to taste
You can grind your coffee beans before you add smoothie ingredients. If you decided to use chilled coffee instead of water or milk omit the beans and coffee extract. Add all the ingredients in your Vita mix or Blend Tec till nice and creamy. As your smoothie sits it will gel due to the Chia Seeds you may add water to thin it. See you can have your coffee and health too!
Great blog and recipe Dawn. I too don’t drink coffee anymore but totally love it. This is a great way to get a little treat in from time to time. Looking forward to more recipes.
